Pensioners awaiting the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission appeal to PM Modi
Employees and pensioners alike are eagerly awaiting the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission. Meanwhile, older pensioners are also concerned about whether their pensions will increase. Consequently, the pensioners' organization REWA (Retired Employees Welfare Association) has appealed to Prime Minister Modi regarding this matter. The organization has written a letter to PM Modi outlining its demands.
This plea has been made by pensioners who retired before January 1, 2026. The association has urged the Finance Ministry to amend the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the 8th CPC to include provisions for revision of pension and family pension for these pensioners.
What's in the letter?
This letter, written by REWA on September 7, 2026, was addressed by its General Secretary, Sadhu Singh, expressing concern on behalf of 6.9 million pensioners and their families. The association stated that they were deeply confused about whether they would be included in the 8th Pay Commission, meaning whether their pensions would be increased.
REWA expressed concern,
citing the ToR of the 8th CPC issued in November 2025. It wrote that point number 2(e) of the ToR states that the Commission will review the structure of pension and death-cum-retirement gratuity for employees covered under NPS/UPS and outside the scope of NPS. REWA also said that this mentions only the pension of currently working employees and does not clearly state any changes in the pension and family pension of former employees, i.e. those pensioners who retired before January 1, 2026.
The association also claimed that the ToRs of previous pay commissions clearly outlined provisions for pension and family pension revisions. Referring to the ToR of the 7th Pay Commission, the association stated that the ToR provided clarity regarding pension revisions. Therefore, the Commission should maintain clarity this time as well, so that pensioners and their families can benefit.
Not only this, REWA also urged the Prime Minister to issue a clarification or press release until a formal amendment is issued, to address the confusion among pensioners. This would provide justice and peace of mind to millions of senior citizens.
