Recently, the number of patients suffering from a dangerous and rare disease, Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), has suddenly increased in Pune. According to several media reports, a total of 59 people have been affected by this disease in the last few days. The age of these patients ranges from children to 80 years and 12 of these patients are being treated on ventilators.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare neurological condition in which the body's immune system attacks its own peripheral nervous system. This infection is mainly caused by a bacteria called Campylobacter jejuni, which enters the body during a stomach infection. This disease can cause weakness, tingling and even paralysis in the limbs.

Dr. Sudhir Kothari, senior neurologist at Pune's Poona Hospital, told the Times of India that it is normal to have one or two patients in a month, but 26 patients in a week is a matter of concern. The reasons behind this should be investigated.

How does this bacteria spread?

Campylobacter bacteria is usually found in infected meat, especially chicken and mutton. Its infection often spreads through contact with undercooked meat, milk or contaminated water. Dr. Sudhir Kumar said that this bacteria causes symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea, after which GBS begins.

Treatment and prevention

This disease can be serious, but if treated early, 95 percent of patients can be completely cured. Dr. Kumar also said that if treated on time, it takes time for the patients to recover completely, but their lives can be saved. However, experts believe that dirty and infected water can also be a major reason for the spread of this disease. Therefore, people living in Pune are being advised to be more cautious in matters of food and drink.
