What is thymus?
The thymus is a small, bifurcated gland located in the upper chest between the lungs. Its main function is to produce white blood cells called T-lymphocytes, which protect the body from infection and disease. In this study, scientists used artificial intelligence to analyze scans and medical records from more than 27,000 patients to understand the link between thymus health and patients' risk of disease.
What was the result?
The results found that those with a healthy thymus had a mortality rate of approximately 13.4 percent, while those with a weakened thymus had a 25.5 percent increased risk. Furthermore, those with a weakened thymus had a 5.3 percent increased risk of lung cancer and a 16.7 percent increased risk of heart disease. Research also suggests that with age, the thymus gradually shrinks and is replaced by fatty tissue. This change can weaken the body's immune system.
Use it for research
To further strengthen this research, the scientists used data from two large studies: the Framingham Heart Study and the National Lung Screening Trial. Using an AI-based deep learning system, the thymus's condition was more accurately assessed. The researchers say that traditional thymus testing methods are not as accurate, so AI technology has played a significant role in this area. This model consistently delivered accurate results across different data sets. The report also suggests that lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet, can positively impact thymus health.
