Crisis Report on Non-Vegetarian Thali: Amidst the ongoing war in Iran, a CRISIL report has revealed a surprising finding. According to it, the price of a homemade non-vegetarian thali declined by 1% in March 2026 compared to the previous year. However, the price of a vegetarian thali remained stable during this period.

In fact, during this period, the reduction in the prices of potatoes, onions, and pulses has compensated for the increasing expenses related to tomatoes, vegetable oil, and fuel, due to which a difference in prices is being seen.

Disclosure in the Crisis report

According to Crisis Intelligence's latest 'Roti Rice Rate' report, the average cost of preparing a vegetarian and non-vegetarian thali was calculated based on prevailing input prices across North, South, East, and West India. This monthly report shows the impact of these price changes on the average person's spending, and highlights the main reasons for this change in key items like grains, broiler chicken, and spices.

The report said, "In March, the price of non-veg thali decreased by 1 percent compared to last year, while the price of veg thali remained stable. This happened because lower prices of potatoes, onions, and pulses reduced the impact of increased prices of tomatoes, vegetable oil, and fuel."

This is how the cost was balanced.

While prices of edible oil (6%), cooking gas (14%), and tomatoes (33%) increased in March this year amid tensions in West Asia, the decline in potato and onion prices offset these rising costs. Non-vegetarian thali prices were also 1% cheaper in March 2026 compared to March 2025, due to a 2% decline in broiler prices during this period.

Why did potatoes and onions become cheaper?

In March, potato prices fell by 13% and onion prices by 25%. This was due to a bumper arrival of these crops during this period. Furthermore, export difficulties due to the war led to a build-up of stocks within the country. Old stocks were being removed from cold storage and markets, leading to a decline in prices.

Why did the price of broiler decrease?

Firstly, Navratri in March reduced demand. Furthermore, in parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, a dispute between chicken retailers and poultry companies over profit margins led to a 2% drop in prices.
