According to a report by China's state broadcaster, CCTV, an estimated 2.5 million cubic meters of water had accumulated in the barrier lake as of Friday (August 28, 2026). A barrier lake is a body of water formed by a dam created by debris falling into a river. Officials said that approximately 3 million cubic meters of water is expected to reach the lake between Thursday (August 27, 2026) and the end of the week, raising the risk of a dam breach.

According to Chinese state media reports, heavy rainfall is also expected in the area in the coming days. China's Ministry of Water Resources stated that this barrier lake, formed at the confluence of the Chochen Khola and Purpu Tsangpo rivers, began overflowing on Thursday (August 27, 2026).
