UPI gave a warning
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) operated by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has alerted about this scam on its X (formerly Twitter) account. They said in the post, "Fraudsters are stealing your OTP through call merging, which can empty your account. Be alert and keep your money safe."
How does call merging scam work?
This scam starts with an unknown call. The caller claims that he has got your number from someone he knows. After this, he says that the person has been put on another call and asks you to merge the calls. As soon as you merge the calls, your phone gets connected to the bank's OTP verification call. After this, your OTP reaches the scammers directly, so that they can easily empty your bank account.
Ways to avoid call merging scam
- Do not merge calls from unknown numbers: Always be cautious of any call merge request from any unknown person.
- Verify the caller: If someone claims to be from your bank or an acquaintance, make sure to confirm their identity before sharing details.
- Report suspicious OTP: If you receive an unsolicited OTP, report it immediately.
- How to report: To report such fraud, call the helpline number 1930. Timely reporting can enable the bank to take necessary action and save you from potential losses.
