Cholesterol Cholesterol plays an important role in the proper functioning of the body. It helps in the formation of healthy cells, production of essential hormones and synthesis of vitamin D. But when its balance is disturbed, this very cholesterol can cause many serious diseases. In particular, when LDL cholesterol (commonly called 'bad cholesterol') increases in the blood, the risk of heart diseases increases. About 31% of people in India suffer from high cholesterol and every year 4.4 million or 7.8% deaths occur due to it.
The biggest concern is that high LDLc has no obvious symptoms, which is why it is called a 'silent killer'. It is usually ignored until a major health crisis occurs. High LDLc can lead to a disease called atherosclerosis, in which cholesterol builds up in the arteries and forms blockages. This obstructs blood flow, which can lead to heart attack, stroke and other serious heart-related problems.
Get a lipid profile test done from the age of 18.
Earlier it was believed that high cholesterol occurs only after the age of 50, but now this myth has been broken. Doctors believe that lipid profile tests should be done regularly from the age of 18. Cholesterol levels can be different for every person and it depends on age, genetics and other diseases.
It is important to follow lifestyle and medicines
Dr. Ashwani Mehta, Senior Consultant Cardiologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, says that most patients do not realize that they have high cholesterol, so they do not take it seriously. About 80% of patients are unable to continue lifestyle changes or regular intake of medicines for a long time.
Controlling high cholesterol requires more than just initial enthusiasm, but consistent effort. Regular intake of medicines is extremely important, as the adherence rate in India is only 60%. Lipid-lowering medicines inhibit the production of cholesterol in the liver or help remove it from the blood. If a person already has a heart disease or other serious health problem, then intake of medicines becomes mandatory.
