The rising obesity and related non-communicable diseases in India have become a serious concern. To tackle these problems, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has released new diet guidelines in 2024. These guidelines aim to change unhealthy diet habits among Indians and improve their health.
Doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), while talking to the media a few days ago, said that the increasing unhealthy diet habits of Indians are becoming the cause of serious diseases. Dr. Parmeet Kaur, Chief Dietician of AIIMS, said that Indians are mostly consuming things that they should not eat. This is becoming the main cause of diet related diseases. 56 percent of diseases in India are related to unhealthy diet and obesity is a growing crisis.
Elements lacking in the diet
AIIMS doctors also said that the consumption of pulses, fruits and vegetables is very low in the diet of Indians, while these provide essential nutrients to our body. According to a survey by the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB), Indians consume less than 50 percent of the daily pulse intake (Recommended Dietary Allowances). Along with this, the consumption of green leafy vegetables and other vegetables is also decreasing, leading to a deficiency of important micro nutrients.
Importance of protein
Dr Kaur advised to increase protein consumption. She said that sprouts, which are rich in vitamin C, B complex, zinc and selenium, should be included in the diet. Apart from this, the consumption of milk and milk products should be increased. She also said that while plant-based diets can be healthy, they lack vitamin B12, which is mainly found in animal products.
It is important to increase the intake of fruits and vegetables
Dr. Kaur also said that we should increase the intake of fruits and vegetables to 400 grams per day. This helps in reducing weight and also controls calorie consumption. Also, she advised to maintain a balance in the intake of oil and fat and asked to avoid excessive consumption of fatty things.
