It started in France in the year 1982, when French Culture Minister Jack Lang laid the foundation of this festival to spread music to the masses. Since then, this festival started being celebrated.

The first World Music Day was celebrated in France on 21 June 1982. The date was chosen because it coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere and is considered suitable for celebration. After its success in France by the late 1980s, the celebration spread to other countries in Europe such as Germany, Italy and Spain.
