Who created the Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar? He left his kingdom and became a Yogi because of his wife's infidelity. The story is interesting.

- Vikram Samvat calendar was created by Yogi Bhrithari.
- He was the elder brother of King Vikramaditya
- Due to the betrayal of the elder queen, he became a recluse and then a yogi
We all are aware of Vikram Samvat and Hindu Calendar. It is considered to be one of the most influential time calculations of ancient India. This Samvat is widely used in India, Nepal and other Hindu majority areas. Do you know who created it? This person was a yogi of his time, who left his kingdom due to his wife's infidelity. He went to the forest. He started meditating and doing penance. Then he became famous as a great yogi.
The work of creating and improving the Vikram Samvat calendar was done by Yogi Bhrithari. He was an Indian saint, yogi and philosopher, who also has an important place in Sanskrit literature.
He was the elder brother of King Vikramaditya
. He was famous for his deep yoga and meditation. He wrote many important texts on ethics, yoga, and meditation. He is believed to have played an important role in the calculation of Vikram Samvat and clarifying its scientific basis.
Bhrithari also has a story of his own. Earlier he was a king. He ruled Ujjain. He was very interested in luxury and enjoyment. It is said that he had many wives, but his chief queen left him deeply shocked
. According to a story, Bhrithari loved his queen very much, but when he found out that his beloved queen actually loved another man, he was so shocked that he became disillusioned with the way of life he was living. This betrayal led him to deep introspection.
Bhrithari was the king of Ujjain at that time. He was always immersed in luxuries. But when he got the proof of his elder queen's betrayal, he was shocked. This was such a shock that his mind turned towards renunciation. He took sanyaas.
What is the whole story of this infidelity?
The name of Bhrithari's wife is said to be Pingla (or Anangsena). He was deeply in love with the queen. There is an interesting story about how he came to know about his wife's infidelity.
According to the story, Bhrithari was gifted an amar phal (fruit that grants immortality) by a saint. Bhrithari gave the fruit to his beloved wife Pingla as he wanted her to stay with him forever. But Pingla gave the fruit to her lover, a horseman. The horseman gave the fruit to another woman who eventually brought it back to Bhrithari as she was impressed by the king. When Bhrithari came to know about the affair of the fruit, he was deeply shocked by his wife's infidelity and the mortality of worldly love. This incident awakened the feeling of renunciation in his mind.
After this shock, he renounced the kingdom
. He made his brother Vikramaditya the king. He himself took sanyaas. He turned towards yoga and meditation. Then he became a great yogi and philosopher. The effect of his renunciation and this deep change in life can be clearly seen in the 'Vairagya Shatak' written by him. He is known for his three Shataks in Sanskrit literature - Shringarshatak, Nitishhatak, and Vairaagyashatak.
Bhrithari was a great mathematician of his time and was adept at calculating the planets and stars. Using this expertise, he created the Hindu Panchag, which is still used in religious Hindu activities and auspicious works across the country.
How the calendar was made
The story of Bhrithari and the creation of the calendar (Samvat) is associated with his brother Vikramaditya. It is believed that Vikramaditya started a new Samvat during his reign, which is known as Vikram Samvat. It is said in folklore that when Bhrithari left the kingdom and took up renunciation, Vikramaditya established this Samvat in honor of his brother or in his memory. In some stories it is also said that Vikramaditya took inspiration from Bhrithari to start this Samvat.
Hindu calendar was not created just like that.
Bhrithari did this work in preparing Vikram Samvat i.e. Hindu Panchang or Hindu Calendar.
Study of astronomical calculations - Bhrithari studied astronomical calculations and cosmic cycles and understood how the year should be calculated. He observed that Panchang can be prepared keeping in mind the movement of the Earth and the Moon.
Analysis of constellations and planets - He studied the position of various planets and their effects. Using this, he calculated the month and year.
Observation of weather change - By analyzing the change of seasons, he organized the dates and months, which affected agriculture and social life.
Adjustment of lunar-solar calculation - Bhrithari developed the technique of adjustment between lunar year and solar year, which made Vikram Samvat more accurate.
Vikram Samvat gradually became popular. It was adopted in many parts of India. It became a standard system for calculating the major festivals and religious rituals of Hinduism.
