WhatsApp Privacy Settings: To make the user experience smoother and more secure, WhatsApp regularly updates its privacy features. Among users, something called “Ghost Mode” has recently become quite popular. Although it sounds like a special feature, Ghost Mode is not an official single toggle inside the app. Instead, it is a combination of multiple privacy settings that, when enabled together, allow you to use WhatsApp almost invisibly.
In simple words, Ghost Mode lets you stay active on WhatsApp without letting others know when you are online, whether you have read their messages, or even what your profile looks like. If you want full control over how and when you appear on WhatsApp, here’s everything you need to know.
What Is WhatsApp Ghost Mode?
WhatsApp Ghost Mode is a set of privacy settings that help you stay hidden while using the app. Once activated:
- No one can see your Last Seen or Online status
- Blue ticks (read receipts) are hidden
- Your profile photo, About info, and status can be restricted
- You can read messages and view statuses discreetly
This mode is especially useful for users who want to avoid pressure to reply instantly or simply prefer more privacy.
How to Hide Online and Last Seen Status
The first step to activating Ghost Mode is hiding your online presence.
Follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings
- Tap on Privacy
- Select Last Seen & Online
- Set Last Seen to Nobody
- Under “Who can see when I’m online,” choose Same as last seen
Once this is done, no one will be able to see whether you are online or when you last used WhatsApp.
Turn Off Blue Ticks (Read Receipts)
If you want to read messages without notifying the sender, you need to disable read receipts.
Steps to disable blue ticks:
- Go to Settings > Privacy
- Turn off Read Receipts
After this, senders will only see two grey ticks, even if you’ve read their message.
Note: This also disables blue ticks for you when others read your messages.
Make Profile Photo, About, and Status Private
To complete Ghost Mode, you should also limit what others can see on your profile.
Profile privacy settings:
- Go to Settings > Privacy
- Set Profile Photo to My Contacts or Nobody
- Set About to My Contacts or Nobody
- Open Status Privacy and choose who can view your status
An added benefit is that if Read Receipts are turned off, you can view other people’s statuses without your name appearing in their viewers list.
Why Should You Use Ghost Mode?
- More control over your time and responses
- No pressure to reply instantly
- Better privacy from unknown or unwanted contacts
- Ideal for work-life balance and mental peace
Final Thoughts
WhatsApp Ghost Mode is not about disappearing completely, but about using the app on your own terms. By smartly adjusting a few privacy settings, you can stay connected without being constantly visible. If privacy matters to you, these settings are definitely worth turning on.
