Vladimir Putin on India: Russian President Vladimir Putin said that attempts to pressure India through sanctions under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have the opposite effect.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday (June 5, 2026) that any attempt to pressure India through sanctions under Narendra Modi's leadership would ultimately backfire. He said India is a sovereign country and has the right to choose its defense and economic partners.
During a speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin stated that India always makes decisions with its national interests in mind. According to him, under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, India has pursued an independent policy and will continue to follow that path despite external pressure. He added that any attempts to impose sanctions or pressure on India will not succeed but will have the opposite effect.
Putin's statement on the Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet
Putin stated that Russia had previously proposed co-developing the Sukhoi Su-57 fighter aircraft with India. However, this partnership failed to materialize, leading Russia to develop the aircraft independently. He stated that the Su-57 is one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world, and Russia is ready to sell it to India. He added that the aircraft can perform multiple roles and its technology is highly advanced. According to him, it is not just a fighter aircraft but can be used in a variety of military operations.
What did Putin say on India-Russia defense relations?
Speaking about India-Russia's defense relations, Putin said that the relationship between the two countries is not limited to just buying and selling. He added that the two countries also work together on joint research and technology development, which is the biggest strength of this partnership. He cited the BrahMos missile project as an example. Putin said that Indian and Russian experts worked together from the very beginning to develop this missile, and the result was extremely successful. According to him, this is an important example of India-Russia defense cooperation.
India is an independent country – Putin
When asked whether India could face US sanctions if it purchases defense systems like the Su-57 or S-500 from Russia, Putin said that India is an independent country and is free to choose the defense equipment best suited to its interests. He said that India has always prioritized its national interests and will continue to do so. Putin also said that he remembers the time when Narendra Modi was denied a US visa before becoming Prime Minister. He said that today the situation has completely changed and relations between India and the US are strengthening. According to him, this shows India's changing global role and ability to adapt to circumstances.
