As West Bengal prepares for vote counting on May 4, political tensions have intensified following serious allegations by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding possible irregularities in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The developments have sparked late-night drama and heightened scrutiny around strong room security across the state.
The controversy unfolded in South Kolkata, where Mamata Banerjee made an unannounced visit to a strong room located at Sakawat Memorial School in the Bhabanipur constituency. She reportedly spent over three hours inside the premises, closely reviewing arrangements and raising concerns over the safety of EVMs stored there.
Why Mamata Banerjee Visited the Strong Room
Explaining her sudden visit, Banerjee said she was prompted by CCTV visuals that showed what she described as suspicious activity near the strong room. According to her statement, the visuals raised enough concern for her to personally inspect the situation.
She also alleged that central security forces initially prevented her from entering the facility. However, she claimed that she was eventually allowed access after asserting her rights as a contesting candidate.
Banerjee further accused authorities of bias in handling the situation, stating that one of her party’s polling agents had been detained. She described the overall approach as “one-sided” and raised questions about transparency in the process.
TMC Alleges Larger Conspiracy
The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) escalated the issue by alleging a broader conspiracy aimed at influencing election results. Party leaders accused the Election Commission of India of working in coordination with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claims that have further intensified the political debate.
In multiple statements, TMC suggested that outsiders were being brought in to create unrest and manipulate public perception. The party also warned that it has the capacity to mobilize thousands of supporters quickly if required.
Despite the strong rhetoric, TMC leaders emphasized that they are exercising restraint and respecting the law. However, they cautioned that any attempt to tamper with EVMs would be met with strict opposition.
Banerjee has also urged party workers to remain vigilant at counting centers and closely monitor the movement of EVMs until the counting process is completed.
Election Commission Rejects Allegations
Responding to the allegations, the Election Commission of India firmly denied any wrongdoing. Officials stated that all strong rooms are sealed and secured according to established protocols.
The Commission clarified that:
- EVMs are stored under strict surveillance
- Entry to strong rooms is highly restricted
- All procedures are carried out in the presence of candidates and observers
- No unauthorized access has been reported
Authorities reiterated that the integrity of the electoral process remains intact and urged political parties to maintain calm.
What Lies Ahead
With counting day approaching, the situation in West Bengal remains tense. The allegations and counterclaims have added to the already charged political atmosphere, making the upcoming results even more crucial.
As the state awaits the final outcome, all eyes are now on May 4, when the vote counting will determine the next phase of West Bengal’s political landscape.
