UPI Payments: UPI has set another record with transactions worth nearly ₹30 lakh crore in May 2026. The digital payments revolution is spreading from major cities to smaller cities as well.

UPI sets new record
UPI Payments: The craze for digital payments continues to grow in India. In May 2026, UPI set a new record. For the first time, transactions worth nearly ₹30 lakh crore were processed through UPI in a single month. However, the real power behind this digital revolution remains the country's major cities. Cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Pune are leading in UPI usage.
New record set in May
According to NPCI data, more than 18.68 billion transactions were processed through UPI in May 2026. The total value of these transactions reached ₹29.9 lakh crore, the highest monthly record ever. This data demonstrates the rapid adoption of digital payments in India over cash. From small shops to large businesses, UPI has now become a vital part of everyday life.
Big cities continue to dominate
Even though UPI has reached the entire country, large cities still lead in terms of transaction value and usage. According to the report, Bengaluru has emerged as the largest hub for UPI payments, followed by Mumbai and Pune. These cities have a large population of working people, startups, and digital service users, leading to a high volume of UPI transactions.
Increasing use in small towns as well
Experts say that UPI is no longer limited to metro cities. Its use is rapidly increasing in tier-2 and tier-3 cities as well. Grocery stores, vegetable vendors, auto drivers, and small merchants are also accepting digital payments. However, despite the increasing number of transactions, larger cities still far outnumber them in terms of total value.
Why is UPI growing?
There are several reasons behind the growing popularity of UPI. Ease of payment, zero or very low fees, QR code-based payments, 24-hour access, and direct transfer from bank account are all reasons why people are increasingly choosing to make payments using their mobile devices rather than carrying cash.
The economy is also benefiting.
The rise of digital payments is making transactions more transparent. This is reducing people's dependence on cash and helping the government strengthen the digital economy.
