Traveling after drinking alcohol

Indian Railways is very strict in the matter of intoxication during train travel. If a passenger is found drunk and misbehaves or causes inconvenience to others, strict action can be taken under Section 145 of the Railway Act, 1989.

Penalties for travelling in a drunken state:

Ticket confiscated

Fine up to ₹500

Imprisonment up to 6 months

In some cases, all three penalties can be imposed simultaneously.

So, boarding a train in a drunken state is not only dangerous but also illegal, and can have serious consequences.

Smoking is also prohibited

If you travel by train, you will see boards saying "Smoking is prohibited" in almost every compartment. Smoking inside the train is strictly prohibited and is punishable under Section 167 of the Indian Railway Act, 1989.

Punishment for smoking in a train:

Fine up to ₹100

Railway employees being drunk

These rules apply not only to passengers, but also to railway employees. If a railway employee is found drunk while on duty, the consequences can be even more severe.

Punishment for drunk railway employees:

Fine up to ₹500

Imprisonment up to 1 year
