This research revealed brain swelling in patients with long covid and chronic fatigue

If there is swelling in the brain, the patient may have to face many problems, now a big thing has come to light in this regard in research done in Australia.

Brain Swelling in Long Covid and Chronic Fatigue: According to a study published on 11 February 2025, patients suffering from long Covid and chronic fatigue have inflammation in a part of the brain that is associated with memory and concentration. Researchers at Griffith University in Australia used an ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine to analyze how long Covid and myalgic encephalomyelitis - also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) - affect brain structures similarly.

How was the research done?

The research included 17 long Covid patients, 29 CFS patients and 15 people who did not have either of the conditions. The team identified significantly higher hippocampus volume in long Covid and CFS patients compared to healthy people. The hippocampus is a small but important part of the brain that helps in learning and converting short-term memory to long-term memory as well as verbal and spatial memory.

What do the researchers say?

Kiran Thapaliya, lead author of the new study, said the findings suggest that hippocampal impairment in long COVID and CFS patients "may play a role in cognitive problems such as memory problems, difficulties in concentration, and delayed responses to questions or conversations."

They said the larger volume could be due to neurogenesis - the process by which new cells are formed in the brain - or the virus in the brain. In addition, the study also found that the size of the hippocampus was associated with the severity of symptoms in both patient groups.

Thapaliya said people with higher hippocampal volume had "decreased concentration, insomniac sleep, pain and fatigue." The researchers noted that the overlap between CFS and long Covid could pave the way for finding potential treatments for both conditions.
