According to the World Air Force 2025 diary, there are currently 20,000 attack helicopters in service in 2025. The most widely used helicopters include the Sikorsky S-70-BEST variant, the UH-60 Black Hawk, and the SH-60 Seahawk. Approximately 4,000 units are in service, but we'll provide information about the world's top five helicopters. These include the AH-64E Apache Guardian, the Mil Mi-28NM Havoc, the Bell AH-1Z Viper Cobra, the Eurocopter Tiger, and the TAI T-1 ATAK TAE. 1. AH-64E Apache Guardian
The AH-64E Apache helicopter is the US Army's most potent weapon and the most widely used helicopter in many countries around the world. It is the newest variant of the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter series. It incorporates several advanced features, including advanced digital connectivity, the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System, the more powerful T700-GE-701D engine, an upgraded face gear transmission, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).  

It is used by air forces around the world, including countries like Egypt, Greece, India, Israel, China, and the UAE. Its largest operator is the US. The military has 824 Apaches in service. It is capable of carrying a heavy weapon system, including the Stinger missile. Its first variant was manufactured in 1975.

2. Mil Mi-28NM Havoc:
This Russian-made helicopter's first variant was completed in 1982. It is the Russian equivalent of the US Apache helicopter. The Mi-28 Havoc is capable of carrying heavy weapons and is designed for combat. It was designed in the 1980s as a tanker buster. It was first deployed in 2009. Equipped with 16 anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), it is capable of penetrating 800mm of armor. It can also carry rocket pods, bombs, and gun pods. It has been used in Syria and Ukraine.


 

3. Bell AH-1Z Viper
Its special feature is that it was developed by the United States in the year 2000. The Viper is a third-generation upgraded version of the Bell AH-1 Cobra helicopter. It has several unique features, including a four-blade rotor system made of composite materials. The AH-1Z Viper is heavily armed. It has a total of six hardpoints, capable of carrying over 5,000 weapons. These can include 76 unguided Hydra rockets, 38 APKWS guided rockets, Sidewinder, Hellfire, or JAGM missiles. These are possessed by the US, Bahrain, and Czech Air Forces.

4. Eurocopter Tiger
It is manufactured by several countries. It came into existence in 1991. It is the second newest helicopter. Initially developed during the Cold War, it was first deployed in 2003. There are several different variants. These include the Tiger HAP (French) – a multi-role attack helicopter with a 30mm cannon, rockets, and Mistral air-to-air missiles, and the Tiger UHT (German) – a long-range anti-tank helicopter equipped with PARS 3 LR and HOT-3 missiles.

5. TAI T129 ATAK
This helicopter is manufactured in Italy and Turkey. It entered service in 2009. It is a significantly upgraded version. This helicopter operates well in hot and high-altitude areas, which is essential for Turkey's mountainous climate. It features an LHTEC CTS800 power plant, improved rotor blades, and an improved cooling system. It has more powerful weapons than the A129.

These include weapons such as the 20mm three-barrel M197 Gatling gun, laser-guided rockets, anti-tank guided missiles, and Stinger air-to-air missiles. The Philippines became the first foreign operator in 2022. Nigeria added two more in 2023. Turkey is now working on developing an indigenous engine.
