Counter-attacks and rising deaths
Following the initial Israeli and US attacks on Saturday, Iran retaliated, targeting US bases in Israel as well as in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. Jordanian and Saudi Arabian officials said they intercepted the Iranian attacks mid-air. Iran-backed groups in Lebanon and Iraq have also joined the conflict.
On Sunday, three American soldiers were killed in an attack on a base housing US troops in Kuwait. Five others were seriously injured, and several others were hurt. An Iranian attack on the Israeli city of Beit Shemesh killed at least nine people and wounded about 30. This is believed to be the largest loss of life so far.
On Saturday, a missile struck the US Navy's Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain's capital, Manama. An unmanned aircraft also struck Kuwait's main airport. Four people were killed when an Iranian missile struck a building in the southern Syrian city of Suweida. In Lebanon, Iran-backed Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel, prompting Israel to bomb its bases near Beirut.
Huge explosion in Tehran, Khamenei's death
Massive explosions rocked Iran's capital, Tehran, sending panic into the streets. The city is among the hardest-hit areas. On Saturday, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in an attack on his secure compound. Satellite images showed extensive damage. A residential area near the 72nd Square in Tehran's Narmak neighborhood was also hit. A school there was reportedly hit, killing two students. The area near Iran's Intelligence Ministry was also targeted. On Sunday, US strikes destroyed the headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Massive destruction outside Tehran as well
The US and Israel also targeted several major cities outside Tehran. At least 175 people were killed in an attack on a girls' school in the southern city of Minab, in what is being described as the largest mass killing incident to date. The school also houses a naval base for Iran's powerful military unit. In the southern city of Lamerd, attacks on a sports complex and a building near a school killed at least 18 civilians.
