Amid the conflict, the US has successfully evacuated thousands of American citizens from the Middle East.
32,000 US citizens returned
According to the US State Department, approximately 32,000 Americans have returned home from the Middle East amid the ongoing war with Iran. The department said it has sent approximately two dozen charter flights to bring back American citizens in recent days. According to an update from the department on Sunday (March 8), a total of 32,000 Americans have returned home since February 28.
People want to leave the Middle East.
The department also stated that more than half of US citizens who requested assistance leaving Middle Eastern countries later declined US government-provided transportation options, preferring to remain in the country or pursue alternative travel plans. Most airports in the region are closed due to tensions, forcing thousands of people to evacuate the Middle East. Some are paying exorbitant prices to charter private jets.
US citizens are instructed to leave the Middle East.
It should be noted that earlier, amid the ongoing war with Iran , the US State Department had instructed its citizens to immediately leave more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries. This decision by the Trump administration was made in response to the situation arising from US-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran.
Instructions to leave these countries
US citizens should immediately leave Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Yemen, said Mora Namdar, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs.
