Karishma Mehta opted for egg freezing: The concept of egg freezing has been rapidly adopted in the last few decades, 'Humans of Bombay' CEO Karishma Mehta recently revealed that she has opted for egg freezing. Now she has explained the reason behind her decision and called it an "insurance policy".

Fear of biological clock
"I decided to freeze my eggs because as women, especially, there is always the looming cloud of a biological clock ticking. It's great if a married couple can plan for kids. But when you're unmarried, the timelines are really not in your control," Mehta said in a social media video.
"Egg freezing is like an insurance policy"
Karishma Mehta, 32, further added, "It is a scientific fact that after the age of 35, your egg count decreases. Your chances of conceiving naturally are much less than in your early 30s. So, egg freezing is just an insurance policy whenever one wants to have children."
Why are 30+ women freezing their eggs?
Reflecting on Karishma's decision, experts said that over the past several decades, there has been a major change in women's attitude towards major life decisions, including family planning.
IVF fertility expert Dr Sulbha Arora told the Indian Express , “The traditional timeline of graduating at 18, getting married at 19 and starting a family soon after is no longer relevant for many women. Nowadays, girls are more empowered to chart their own path, whether that means prioritising career development and delaying marriage and childbearing, or adjusting the timeline in other ways that best suit their individual circumstances.”
Benefits of Egg Freezing
Dr Arora further added that for a large number of women, the ability to conceive later in life becomes an increasing concern as age can affect fertility levels and prevent pregnancy. As a fertility preservation technique, egg freezing or oocyte cryopreservation helps preserve eggs for future pregnancies. This involves ovulation, where eggs are produced, harvested, frozen and used when needed.
Dr Arora said, “Egg freezing creates new possibilities and options for women who want to preserve their fertility and make an informed decision about starting a family when they feel ready and wish to do so.”
Keep this in mind
While this newfound flexibility is liberating, "it also requires careful consideration of one's reproductive health," says Dr Arora, adding that hormone tests such as anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) give an estimate of remaining egg supply, or ovarian reserve.
