Government's response to questions raised on E20 petrol

Government on E20 Petrol Controversy: Various claims and videos regarding ethanol-infused petrol, or E20, are going viral on social media. In light of this controversy, the central government has now responded. The government has stated that the ethanol blending program has been thoroughly scientifically tested and is continuously monitored by the government.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has stated that some individuals are deliberately spreading misleading information on social media. Old photos and videos are being shared as new, in an attempt to create unnecessary fear and gain more views.

What is the Ethanol Blending Programme?

This program was launched in 2003. Its goal is to reduce crude oil imports, strengthen the country's energy security, and improve the environment. Gradually, it was implemented, and from 2023, 20 percent ethanol was added to petrol, or E20. The government stated that since the introduction of E20 petrol, there have been no major complaints of engine damage or vehicle failure due to ethanol.

Government's response to viral claims

The government has denied videos showing sugarcane juice being directly mixed with petrol. According to the ministry, ethanol, which is added to fuel, is produced through a specific industrial process. It is made from materials like sugarcane juice, molasses, broken rice, and corn, but after undergoing processes like fermentation, its properties become completely different from the raw materials.

What did the government say on the viral anti-video?

A clarification has also been issued regarding the viral anti-video. Bharat Petroleum stated that the sugar in ethanol fuel is completely removed and that it contains ingredients that repel insects, so the claim that E20 attracts ants is false.

Water and insurance claims

Regarding the claim that ethanol absorbs water, the government stated that water in any fuel is harmful. Modern vehicles are already designed to prevent water from entering the tank. The claim that using E20 will void vehicle insurance has also been dismissed as false by the companies involved.

It is also being used abroad.

The government pointed out that ethanol blending also occurs in countries like the United States, Brazil, and Japan. Brazil has long been blending more ethanol, and E27 is the standard gasoline there.

How much did the country benefit?

According to the ministry, this program has saved the country approximately ₹1.4 lakh crore in foreign exchange on crude oil imports. It has also increased demand for farmers' crops, boosting their incomes and the rural economy. The government stated that ethanol blending is increasing the country's energy security, reducing carbon emissions, and paving the way for clean mobility.
