Fresh tensions erupted along the India-Pakistan border late Monday night after several suspicious drones were spotted over Samba in Jammu and Kashmir and parts of Punjab, just days after the ceasefire agreement between the two nations.
Blackout Ordered, Air Defence Activated
Following the sightings, the Indian Army and Air Force immediately activated air defence protocols, and authorities ordered a blackout across Samba and other vulnerable border areas. Residents were asked to stay indoors and remain calm.
“Some suspicious drones were seen in Samba, and swift action is being taken,” said an Army official. “There is no need to panic. We’re fully alert.”
Army Downs Drones Near Border, Say Sources
According to intelligence sources, multiple drones were detected near the International Border and Line of Control (LoC) and were shot down by Indian security forces. Some of the activity was captured on video by local residents.
Despite the ceasefire announced at 5 p.m. on May 10 following three days of conflict, drone incursions have continued, raising questions about Pakistan’s intentions and adherence to the agreement.
Drone Activity Expands Into Punjab
Reports of drone sightings weren’t limited to Jammu. In Punjab, Jalandhar, Dasuya, Mukerian (Hoshiarpur), and Surnasi also reported unidentified drone activity and explosions.
- Siren alerts were triggered in Jalandhar.
- Electricity was cut in several areas to enforce blackout conditions.
- Explosions heard: Residents in Hoshiarpur claimed they heard 5 to 7 rounds of blasts following the drone activity.
Precautionary Closures Across Border Districts
In response, authorities in Amritsar, Pathankot, and Tarn Taran have announced the closure of all schools and colleges on May 13. In Fazilka, educational institutions will remain shut for two days as a safety measure.
Context: Post-Ceasefire Tensions
These developments come amid ongoing post-ceasefire talks. The second round of discussions between India’s and Pakistan’s DGMOs took place Monday evening. However, the drone provocations have cast a shadow over the truce’s credibility.
