Sunil Gavaskar on Pakistan

Six days before the start of the 2026 T20 World Cup, the Pakistan government announced that its team would participate in the upcoming World Cup, but would not play the league match against India on February 15. This unusual decision was announced by the Pakistani government on the social media platform X last Sunday (February 1), prompting a furious outburst from former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar.

Gavaskar said that if you withdraw at the very end, that's a problem. He further said that the ICC should take action against Pakistan on this issue to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.

The problem is withdrawing at the very end

Speaking to India Today, Sunil Gavaskar said, "If you withdraw at the last minute, then it is a problem. Yes, if you had withdrawn earlier, then it would have been a different matter. But if you withdraw at the last minute, on the eve of the tournament, then I think the ICC should definitely intervene and take some action."

He further said, "I don't know what decision he will take, but I think there are a lot of boards involved, so it won't be a decision of one person. However, it should be something that ensures that no one thinks of doing this in the future."

ICC may take legal action

Taking his point forward, Gavaskar said, "The ICC will probably take legal action against Pakistan for refusing to play against India, but I cannot say what the outcome of this action will be. It is certain that the ICC will be very disappointed with the decision of the Pakistan government."
