A bizarre case of corruption has come to light in Bihar's Siwan district, where a sub-inspector, frustrated with washing clothes by hand, demanded a washing machine as a bribe from a local resident. Mithlesh Kumar Manjhi, the police station in-charge at Asav police station, not only asked for the washing machine but also demanded 50,000 rupees in exchange for manipulating a land dispute case. This outrageous demand for a washing machine as a bribe has stirred considerable discussion among both the public and police departments.
The incident began when Chandan Kumar Yadav, a resident of Sasarav village, was involved in a land dispute with his relatives, leading to a case being filed at Asav police station. During the investigation, Chandan claimed that the sub-inspector visited his home multiple times, initially threatening him and his family with jail time. Then, the officer suggested that some names could be removed from the case if Chandan paid a bribe. When Chandan hesitated, the officer switched tactics, telling him he could help if Chandan bought him a washing machine, along with a sum of money.
After Chandan reported the sub-inspector's demands to the vigilance department, an undercover investigation was launched. The officer's request was confirmed, and a deal was struck for a washing machine and 20,000 rupees. The vigilance team set up a trap at Hospital Road in Siwan, where Chandan delivered the washing machine and money. As soon as the sub-inspector received the bribe, he was arrested by the vigilance team.
Mithlesh Kumar Manjhi was taken to Patna, where further investigation and legal proceedings will follow. This incident highlights the rampant corruption within certain sectors of the police force and the lengths to which some officials will go to exploit their authority.
