Some people are bitten by mosquitoes more than others, what is the reason behind this?

Mosquitoes repeatedly bite one of the two people sitting nearby and do not even touch the other. Know the real reason behind this.

Mosquito Mystery: You may have often noticed or observed that among people sitting in the same place, mosquitoes bite one person more often, while the person sitting nearby doesn't bite at all. This is no coincidence. According to scientists, mosquitoes first sense carbon dioxide released with breathing from a distance, and then use cues like body odor, heat, and moisture to approach their target.

Body odor and heat become a major reason.

Every person's body odor is unique because bacteria on the skin convert sweat and other skin secretions into chemicals whose scent attracts mosquitoes. A 2022 study found that people whose skin produced more of certain carboxylic acids were more attractive to Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, and a recent 2026 study also found a link between body odor and mosquito preferences. This doesn't necessarily mean that poor hygiene causes more mosquito bites. This odor is created by natural factors like the microbiome, genetics, and body chemicals. Similarly, if the body is warm or sweating more, it becomes easier for mosquitoes to detect, which is why mosquitoes bite more after exercise or exertion.

Do blood group and pregnancy also make a difference?

There's often a belief that mosquitoes bite more often those with blood type O, and some studies have shown this attraction. However, scientists don't consider this to be the primary or definitive cause of mosquito bites, as cues like skin odor, CO₂, and body heat often play a more significant role. Similarly, mosquitoes may be more attracted to some women during pregnancy, attributed to increased CO₂ emissions and changes in body temperature. However, this effect isn't necessarily consistent across mosquito species and in every situation. While the concept of "sweet blood" is often heard, it's not scientifically proven. In reality, mosquitoes consider several different cues before choosing a particular person.

Simple and effective ways to protect yourself from mosquitoes

To avoid mosquitoes, it's important to keep your body well-covered during the evening and night. Install nets or screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering the house. Avoid water stagnation anywhere nearby, and use mosquito repellents as needed. It's also interesting to know that only female mosquitoes bite humans because they need blood to lay eggs, while male mosquitoes rely solely on plant sap.
