Phone Call Scam Alert: Despite Efforts to Curb Fraudulent Calls, Scammers Are Using New Tactics to Deceive People
Hyderabad: Cybercriminals Exploiting Internet Calls for Fraud
Tech Desk: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) implemented a new policy on October 1, 2024, aimed at curbing fraudulent calls and messages. Telecom companies are also leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technology to block scam calls and messages.
However, scammers constantly evolve their methods to deceive people. Recently, fraudsters have been using internet-based calls to scam individuals. The Thailand Telecom Regulatory Authority has issued a warning about specific numbers that cybercriminals use to empty bank accounts through internet calls.
Beware of These Scam Numbers!
The regulatory authority has identified numbers starting with +697, +698, and +66 as frequently used by scammers for internet calls. These calls are difficult to trace, making them a preferred tool for cybercriminals. To mask their locations, fraudsters use Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), making it challenging for law enforcement agencies to track them down.
What to Do If You Receive Such a Call?
To protect yourself, the Thailand Telecom Authority advises people to avoid answering calls from these numbers. If you accidentally receive such a call, do not share any personal information. Scammers often pose as representatives of government offices or banks to gain your trust and steal sensitive data.
The Growing Threat of VoIP Scams
The Thailand Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has urged citizens not to answer calls from numbers beginning with +697, +698, or +66, as they are often linked to phone scams. Although +66 is Thailand’s country code, any call made using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) should be viewed with suspicion. Fraudsters use these calls to extract personal information and manipulate individuals into financial fraud.
Report Fraudulent Calls and Messages
To combat such scams, the Government of India has launched the Chakshu Portal, where individuals can report fraudulent calls and messages. Stay informed, stay alert, and always verify before sharing any sensitive information over a phone call.
Protect yourself from scams – stay vigilant and never trust unknown callers!
