Sawan Somwar Kheer Recipe: As soon as the month of Sawan begins, an atmosphere of devotion to Lord Shiva prevails. During this period, people observe fasts on Mondays and visit temples to offer prayers. Mondays in Sawan also have their own significance. During this fast, simple food is eaten, devoid of grains. Fruit and Nut Kheer is a great option, made with milk, lotus seeds, fruits, and nuts, and provides strength to the body during the fast.

How is this kheer different from the common kheer?

Kheer is usually made with rice and sugar, but this fasting kheer uses makhana instead of rice, along with fresh fruits and nuts. Makhana, derived from lotus seeds, is light and easy to digest, making it a popular fasting food for centuries. The best part about makhana is that it provides essential nutrition to our bodies and maintains energy levels even during fasting.

What good food is available?

Milk and lotus seeds provide calcium, which is good for bones. Nuts like almonds, cashews, and pistachios are considered good for the heart and skin. The fresh fruits added to this dish are also beneficial for the body. This means that this kheer is not only delicious but also good for health.

essential items

  • 1 litre full-cream milk
  • 2 cups makhana
  • 10 almonds, chopped
  • 10 cashews, chopped
  • 8 pistachios, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons raisins
  • 1 apple, chopped
  • Half a cup of pomegranate seeds
  • Half teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 2-3 tbsp jaggery powder or sugar
  • 1 tsp ghee

Method of preparation

First, heat ghee and fry the makhanas until they're slightly crisp. Break half of the makhanas slightly, leaving the other half whole. Now, boil the milk and cook until it thickens slightly. Add the broken and whole makhanas, then add almonds, cashews, pistachios, raisins, and cardamom powder. Let the kheer cool slightly, then add the chopped fruits and mix everything gently. If you prefer to eat it cold, keep it in the refrigerator, and before serving, garnish it with some more fruits and nuts.

Easy ways to make it healthier

  • Use low-fat milk instead of full-cream milk
  • Add more sweet fruits and keep the amount of sugar or jaggery low.
  • Do not add too much ghee while roasting makhana.
  • Increase the amount of almonds and pistachios slightly.
  • You can also add chia seeds or flax seeds.
  • Use only fresh and seasonal fruits
