This could reduce the need for frequent SIM or eSIM changes and separate mobile connections for both phones.
What is iPhone Handoff?
iPhone Handoff is a feature that allows two iPhones to be connected to a single mobile number. Calls and messages can then be sent from both devices to the same number. Apple designed this feature specifically for those who frequently switch between two iPhones. Once the feature is set up, simply unlock the iPhone you want to use. The phone automatically activates Handoff, and the user can then make calls or send messages from the same number.
How does this feature work?
To use iPhone Handoff, both iPhones must be running iOS 27 or later. Both phones must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network and signed in to the same Apple Account for iCloud, FaceTime, and iMessage.
During setup, one iPhone is designated as the primary device and the other as the secondary device. The primary iPhone holds the primary eSIM and carrier settings. However, both phones can also use their own eSIMs, provided the carrier supports them.
How to set up iPhone Handoff?
Place both iPhones side by side and unlock one. Then, go to Settings > Cellular and select Set Up Cellular/Add eSIM or iPhone Handoff. Tap Use Number on This iPhone and Another and follow the on-screen instructions.
One phone can then be assigned as the primary iPhone. A small notification also appears next to the Dynamic Island when the feature is activated.
Which companies will it work on now?
The most important point here is that iPhone Handoff isn't just a feature built into the phone. It also requires mobile carrier support. According to media reports, T-Mobile in the US and Telekom in Germany have currently confirmed support for it. T-Mobile in the US is charging an additional $5 per month for this feature. Carrier support availability for this feature in India will need to be verified separately.
For whom is this feature useful?
For your information, this feature can be very convenient for users who own two iPhones. For example, someone who purchases a new iPhone can use their old phone while traveling. Similarly, users who own separate iPhones for work and personal use can use the same number on both devices.
However, this does have some limitations. For example, it doesn't automatically switch the Apple Watch to another iPhone, and some Wallet items, like IDs and passes, may not be available on both devices.
