Congress Working Committee member Shashi Tharoor said he feels that if the Congress comes to power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party may nominate its chief Mallikarjun Kharge, or former AICC president Rahul Gandhi as prime minister.

Tharoor said there could be surprising results in the elections next year as there is an opposition alliance and the Centre-India alliance is likely to come to power by defeating the BJP-led NDA in the general elections.

"So we will have to wait and see," he said while interacting with professionals from US-based and Silicon Valley-incubated D2C (direct-to-consumer) marketplace Way.com after inaugurating its office at Technopark here. ''

Talking about the post-poll scenario, he said, "I think once the results come, because it is an alliance and not a party, the leaders of those parties will have to come together and someone would choose. But my guess from the Congress party will be either Mr. Kharge, who will be the first Dalit Prime Minister of India, or Rahul Gandhi because in many ways it (Congress) is a family-run party.

Former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor said that the Prime Minister is first among his peers and he has confidence in his ability to carry out whatever responsibilities will be assigned to him.
