According to a report by The New Yorker, OpenAI's AI tool ChatGPT is consuming 5 lakh kilowatts of electricity every hour.
If the average is calculated, ChatGPT is consuming 17 thousand times more electricity than American homes every day. This consumption is happening at the request of 20 crore users.
If this figure increases then electricity consumption will also automatically increase. Talking to Business Insider, data scientist Alex de Vries said that Google includes generative AI in every search.
Alex de Vries further said that it could consume about 29 billion kilowatt hours a year, which would exceed the annual electricity consumption of countries like Kenya, Guatemala and Croatia.
