A video showcasing a unique, QR code-based doorbell has gone viral, leaving social media users divided. Unlike conventional doorbells that require a press, this innovative ‘calling bell’ allows visitors to notify the homeowner by scanning a QR code and making a call.
How It Works
In the video, a woman installs a compact board near her door, replacing the traditional doorbell with a QR code sticker. When visitors arrive, they must scan the code with their phone’s camera to initiate a call, alerting the resident of their presence.
The video was shared on Instagram by Vinshi Bansal, who described it as the “most unique doorbell”. The clip also promotes ‘DoorVi,’ a company specializing in smart doorbell solutions. In her caption, Bansal highlighted its benefits, stating, “It helps you when you are not at home, when you are busy, and when you are sharing your home with someone.”
Mixed Reactions From Netizens
While some users found the concept intriguing, many criticized the idea, arguing that traditional doorbells are more practical and secure.
Concerns Over Security & Convenience
Many users pointed out that the system could pose privacy risks. One user commented, “Dangerous! Any random person could get direct access to a video call. A more secure solution is needed.”
Others found it impractical, saying they wouldn’t want to engage in a video call with delivery personnel or frequent visitors like milk vendors.
Time-Consuming & Unnecessary?
Some believed the process of scanning a QR code to ring a doorbell was unnecessarily complicated. “Nobody is going to install an app just to make a video call to ring a bell,” one comment read. However, the company clarified, “Visitors don’t need to install any app. They can simply scan using their phone’s camera.”
Interest in the Product
Despite the criticism, a few users expressed curiosity about the innovation, asking for purchase links and showing interest in trying it.
A Step Toward Smart Homes or an Unnecessary Gimmick?
While the QR-based doorbell eliminates wiring and offers a modern alternative, its practicality and security remain debatable. For some, it’s a futuristic upgrade; for others, it’s an unnecessary inconvenience. Would you replace your traditional doorbell with a QR code?
