Why are metabolic diseases increasing in India?

Why Metabolic Diseases Are Rising In India: The burden of metabolic diseases is rapidly increasing in India and has become a matter of serious concern. According to a recent study, India has reached the first position in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of deaths and disability-adjusted life years due to type 2 diabetes. Let us tell you what the study revealed.

What came out in the study?

This study, conducted by experts from 11 countries, revealed that in 1990, China had the highest number of type 2 diabetes cases, followed by India, Indonesia, Japan, and Pakistan. However, by 2023, the situation changed, and India overtook China to become the country with the highest number of cases. This analysis is based on data from the Global Burden of Disease. The study also revealed that India and China bear the highest burden of five major metabolic diseases in the Asia-Pacific region: type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, body mass index, poor cholesterol, and fatty liver disease.

What do experts say?

According to Anoop Mishra, writer for the study, India ranks first in terms of disease burden and deaths related to type 2 diabetes, while China ranks first and India ranks second in the remaining four diseases, which is a matter of serious concern. He said that according to the data of the year 2023, India is facing the highest burden of metabolic diseases in the Asia-Pacific region. More than 2.1 crore cases and about 5.8 lakh deaths were recorded in the country due to type 2 diabetes alone, which shows its huge impact.

He also explained that diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, and fatty liver are interconnected conditions, which are increasing primarily due to poor diet and lack of physical activity. These diseases can lead to serious complications such as kidney failure, heart attack, heart failure, severe liver disease, stroke, and various types of cancer.

How many people are suffering?

According to the study, India will see 21,345,118 cases and 578,367 deaths related to type 2 diabetes in 2023, while China will see 10,940,382 cases and 172,911 deaths. Across the Asia-Pacific region, approximately 49 million cases of type 2 diabetes will be reported in 2023, with 54.1 percent of these cases occurring in men. High blood pressure poses the greatest burden in the region, contributing to approximately 138 million disease-years and 6.27 million deaths. This is followed by overweight, poor cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver disease. The total disease burden is projected to increase by 1.7 to 3.7 times between 1990 and 2023. It is estimated that the burden of these diseases will increase further by the year 2030, in which high blood pressure will remain the biggest cause.
