MBBS Student Gang-Raped in Sangli: Drugged and Assaulted by Classmates in Apartment Trap

A horrifying case has emerged from Sangli, Maharashtra, where a third-year MBBS student from Karnataka was allegedly gang-raped by three acquaintances. The accused, aged between 20 and 22, reportedly lured the victim to a rented apartment in Wanleswadi on the pretext of watching a movie and then spiked her drink with intoxicants.
The Crime
According to the FIR, the incident occurred on the night of May 18, between 10 PM and midnight. All three men, known to the victim—two of them being her former classmates—are accused of sexually assaulting her while she was semi-conscious. After the incident, the student was threatened with death if she reported it.
The Victim’s Courage and Police Action
Despite the trauma, the student displayed immense courage by confiding in her parents, who helped her file a complaint with the Winghambag Police Station. Acting swiftly, police arrested all three suspects on Tuesday night. They were presented in court on Wednesday and are currently in police custody until May 27.
Investigation and Legal Action
Winghambag Police Inspector Sudhir Bhalerao confirmed the arrests and stated that the medical examination report is awaited. The police are also verifying the victim’s detailed statement. A case has been registered under Section 70(1) of the Indian Justice Code, which deals specifically with gang rape and carries a minimum punishment of 20 years in prison upon conviction.
