How to make Modak at home?

With the arrival of Ganesh Chaturthi, preparations begin in homes to welcome Lord Ganesha. From bringing the idol of Lord Ganesha to decorating the place of worship and preparing the offerings, each step holds its own significance. Various sweets are offered to Lord Ganesha during this time, but modaks are the most popular. It is believed that modaks are dear to Lord Ganesha, so they are specially prepared during Ganesh Chaturthi. While many types of modaks are readily available in the market, fresh homemade modaks are a special treat. The good thing is that they don't require many ingredients. So, let's learn an easy way to make delicious modaks at home.

These things are needed to make Modak

To make modaks at home, first prepare the necessary ingredients. You'll need about one cup of rice flour, one cup of grated coconut, half a cup of jaggery, one teaspoon of ghee, and a little cardamom. If desired, you can also add finely chopped cashews and almonds. Additionally, you can use water and a little salt to prepare the dough. Preparing the ingredients in advance will reduce the hassle of making modaks.

How to prepare sweet filling for Modak

The filling of the modak enhances its flavor. To prepare it, heat some ghee in a pan and add grated coconut. After roasting it for a while on low flame, add jaggery. Now, mix both the ingredients well and cook. When the jaggery melts and mixes well with the coconut, add cardamom. If desired, you can also add some cashews and almonds at this time. Be careful not to let the filling become too wet; otherwise, it may become difficult to shape the modak later.

Now prepare the Modak dough.

Once the filling is ready, it's time to prepare the outer layer of the modak. To do this, heat water in a pot, add a little ghee and a little salt. Once the water is hot, reduce the heat to low and add the rice flour, stirring constantly. Once the flour is well mixed with the water, turn off the heat and cover the pot. While the mixture is still slightly warm, knead it well with your hands. The dough should be soft so it doesn't crack when forming the modaks.

Give beautiful shape to Modak

Now form small balls of the prepared dough. Press one ball with your hands to flatten it slightly and shape it into a bowl. Place the prepared coconut and jaggery filling in the center. Now, using your fingers, pull the edges upwards to close them and shape them into modaks. If you have a modak mold, you can use that as well.

Prepare by steaming.

Now heat some water in a steamer and place the modaks on top. They can be steamed for about 10 to 15 minutes. Once cooked, the outer layer of the modaks will become soft and slightly shiny. Remove them from the steamer and let them cool for a while. Then, apply some ghee on top. Your delicious homemade modaks are now ready to be offered to Lord Ganesha.
