GST forms reforms

The Finance Ministry will seek comments from businesses and professionals from November 1 on proposed changes to the revised monthly GST return form, effective November 1, 2026. Gaurav Singh, Commissioner, GST Policy Division, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), said the department will also work towards streamlining the GST audit process, news agency PTI reported.

Why is there a need for amendment?

The 57th meeting of the GST Council, comprising central and state finance ministers, approved an alternative mechanism for revising liabilities and input tax credit (ITC) in GST returns. This is aimed at reducing discrepancies and reducing the need for notices.

The Council approved amendments to GST forms GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, and IFF to better match the information provided in these forms with the information provided in the monthly tax payment form GSTR-3B. The new forms will strengthen data matching between GSTR-1/1A/IFF and GSTR-3B to facilitate correction of tax liability errors. Another objective is to create an alternative mechanism that will provide taxpayers with an option to revise their liabilities and ITC in their returns. This will reduce auto-generated notices due to errors.

When will you be able to give suggestions?

The revised GST return forms will be uploaded to the MyGov portal on November 1st for public feedback. Suggestions can be made until November 30th. The revised GST return forms will be effective from April 1st, 2027. The Finance Ministry's Legal Department has given final approval to these notifications and circulars to give legal effect to the decisions taken at the 57th meeting of the GST Council on October 8th. Once they are made public on Friday, taxpayers and businesses will gain complete clarity on several key rules.
