America becomes the largest LPG supplier.

India LPG Imports: Amid recent tensions in West Asia, India has made a major shift in its LPG supply strategy. The country no longer wants to rely solely on Gulf countries for its gas needs. This is why the United States accounted for the largest share of LPG purchases in June. According to the data, the United States continues to be India's largest LPG supplier, while major countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait also continue to supply gas.

In June, India received 77.3 million metric tons of LPG from the United States, an increase of approximately 19.4% compared to May. The UAE, meanwhile, was India's second-largest supplier of LPG, delivering approximately 15.7 million metric tons. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait also supplied 64,000 metric tons of LPG each in June.

Why did India change its strategy?

Recently, amid tensions in West Asia, there was considerable public outcry over the supply of LPG and crude oil. Consequently, India has decided to increase energy purchases from various countries to avoid any future problems.

When did LPG supply increase?

According to data from commodity analytics firm Kpler, India's total LPG supply increased to 1.191 million metric tons in June, compared to 1.155 million metric tons in May, representing a nearly 3% increase in a single month.

However, India has also signed a long-term agreement to purchase 2.2 million tons of LPG annually from the United States to strengthen its energy security. This is primarily aimed at strengthening the energy partnership between India and the United States and reducing dependence on any one country.

What will be the plan ahead?

  • India will no longer be dependent only on Gulf countries, but will continue to purchase LPG from different countries.
  • The supply of LPG and crude oil will also increase from other countries, including America.
  • The government's aim is to strengthen energy security so that there is no problem in the availability of fuel.
