As border tensions between India and Pakistan escalate following failed drone attacks by Pakistan and India’s decisive military retaliation, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has issued an emotional appeal calling for peace. Visibly moved to tears, she urged both nations to prioritize humanity over hostility, stating that “live and let live” should guide both governments in this time of crisis.
“Political, Not Military, Intervention Needed”
In a press briefing on Friday, Mehbooba Mufti stressed that the ongoing conflict is not only causing fear but destroying lives and homes, especially in border regions. She emphasized:
“The tension between India and Pakistan is increasing every day. Innocent people—women, children—are losing their homes and their lives. We need political dialogue, not military escalation.”
Mufti called for restraint from both nations’ leadership and military to prevent further civilian suffering, stating that the consequences of war are being borne by those who never supported it in the first place.
Appeal to Prime Minister Modi
The PDP leader directly appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referencing his earlier diplomatic intervention during the Russia-Ukraine war, which had led to the evacuation of Indian students.
“I urge Prime Minister Modi—who has previously intervened in global conflicts—to act now. If you could stop the war there, why not here, when our own children are dying?”
Criticism of Media Coverage
Mehbooba Mufti also strongly criticized both Indian and Pakistani media for their sensationalism during this sensitive period.
“The role of the media should be to heal, not to instigate or inflame. Reporting that Islamabad has been destroyed or hyping false narratives only adds fear. Real stories lie in the hospitals, not in the headlines.”
She urged journalists to act responsibly and focus on the human cost of conflict rather than military bravado.
“Stop Killing Our Children”
Fighting back tears, Mufti made a final plea:
“If both countries admit to having suffered losses, then why are we still letting our children die? This will not solve Pulwama or Pahalgam. Violence is not the answer.”
Ground Situation Remains Volatile
Meanwhile, the situation along the Line of Control and International Border remains tense, with the Indian government and armed forces maintaining a high alert. Air defence systems have successfully intercepted multiple threats, and civil safety measures—including blackouts and evacuations—are in place across border districts like Kutch, Pathankot, and Udhampur.
