World Food Safety Day is celebrated every year on 7 June. The purpose of celebrating this day is to explain the importance of food safety and to ensure that safe food is available. The foundation of celebrating this day was laid as a result of the efforts of the World Health Organization along with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
History of World Food Safety Day
The United Nations General Assembly decided to celebrate Food Safety Day on 20 December 2018. After which the date of 7 June was fixed to celebrate this day. The following year i.e. on 7 June 2019, World Food Safety Day was celebrated for the first time.
Theme of Food Safety Day 2024
This special day has a special theme every year. This year the theme of Food Safety Day 2024 has been set as 'Safe Food Better Health'.
Importance of Food Safety
Food safety is an important part of our lives. It ensures that the food we consume is healthy and safe. Unsafe food can pose serious health hazards, such as foodborne illnesses, which affect millions of people annually.
Major Issues of Food Safety
Hygiene- It is imperative to maintain hygiene during food preparation and storage.
Contamination- Food should be protected from contamination by chemicals and other harmful substances.
Evaluation- Regular evaluation of the quality and safety of food items is necessary.

Food Safety Act
The Government of India has enacted the National Food Security Act 2013, which provides food grains at affordable rates to the poor and deprived sections of the country.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) monitors the quality and safety of food items.
Social Awareness
Various government institutions and NGOs run campaigns to make people aware of food safety.
