Drink water

Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water throughout the day. If you do not like plain water then you can also drink lemon water and orange juice. Both of these contain citrate, which can prevent stone formation.

Reduce salt intake

Excess salt or a high-salt diet increases the risk of calcium kidney stones. Excess salt in the urine prevents calcium from being reabsorbed from the urine into the blood. This leads to high amounts of calcium in the urine, which can lead to kidney stones.

Reduce intake of oxalate-rich foods

Some kidney stones are made of oxalate, a natural compound found in foods that combine with calcium in urine to form kidney stones. In such a situation, limit the intake of greens, coffee, peanuts, chocolate and tomatoes. This may help prevent stone formation.

Reduce animal protein intake

Eating too much animal protein may increase your risk of kidney stones. This doesn't just mean red meat; it also includes chicken, pork, fish and eggs. You don't need to become a vegetarian; you just have to limit your meat consumption.
