Even today, if you have any work related to the bank, then people have to go to the bank because all the work cannot be done online. For example, if someone takes a home loan, then one has to go to the bank to sign papers or for other reasons, or if you are getting a demand draft made, then also you have to go to the bank, etc. At the same time, in many banks, you apply online to open an account, but you have to go to the bank to get the passbook and other things.
