The number of accidents on the Bangalore-Mysuru Expressway, formerly known as the "Death Highway". This reduction is a sigh of relief for the passengers and is the result of stringent safety measures implemented by the police department and the National Highway Authority.
The infamous NH 275 expressway connecting Bangalore and Mysuru had long been known for its increased number of accidents. Which had caused widespread concern across Karnataka. These incidents also led to several level discussions between ministers, local representatives and senior police officials regarding the chaotic condition of the highway.
Acting on these concerns, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Alok Kumar, along with police and highway officials, found out several reasons contributing to the accidents. The subsequent implementation of targeted safety measures by them has yielded positive results.
From January to May 2023, there were 288 accidents on the Bengaluru-Mysuru national highway, with 100 deaths and 301 injuries. In contrast, there were only 125 accidents, 31 deaths and 167 injuries during the same period in 2024, marking a significant reduction.
The key to this improvement has been the strategic placement of surveillance cameras at five important points on both the Bengaluru-Nidagutta and Nidagutta-Mysuru stretches. These cameras fall under the jurisdiction of the Ramanagara and Mandya district police departments. The police control rooms in each district now have servers that meticulously record traffic rule violations, ensuring faster response and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
