Many studies have been done regarding whether cosmetic products can prove to be harmful for health. But despite this, people use it extensively. Recently a 26 year old girl had to suffer the consequences of this after getting her hair straightened.
According to a report published in The New England Journal of Medicine, after the hair straightening process, the girl started suffering from vomiting, back pain, diarrhea and fever. The girl did not have any kidney related disease before . But after hair straightening, she faced frequent kidney pain due to oxalate nephropathy. Due to hair treatment, he also suffered from ulcer in his head.
This cream was used in the treatment
The girl told doctors that her hair was treated with a straightening cream containing glyoxylic acid. This chemical caused burning sensation and ulceration in his head along with kidney damage. Doctors discovered this by experimenting on rats. The study also revealed that after hair treatment, the girl was suffering from oxalate nephropathy, due to which she was facing symptoms of kidney damage.
What is oxalate nephropathy?
According to the National Institutes of Health, oxalate nephropathy is a medical condition in which calcium oxalate crystals accumulate in the tubules of the kidneys. Due to this the kidney gets damaged and it is not able to function properly. This situation can occur due to many reasons. These include consumption of high-oxalate foods, certain medications, chemicals or underlying metabolic disorders.

Glyoxylic acid is used in the hair straightening process to straighten the hair better. This cream breaks the disulfide bonds in the hair, making it easier to reshape the hair.
