Study on Vitamin D Supplements: Vitamin D is very important to keep our bones strong. It helps in maintaining calcium in bones. Due to deficiency of Vitamin D, the bones of our body start becoming weak. Usually it is obtained from food items and sun rays. Due to deficiency of Vitamin D in the body, there can be a lot of damage to the bones. For those who are suffering from weak bones, doctors advise them to take Vitamin D supplements as per need. It is believed that these supplements play an important role in maintaining calcium level in bones. However, many surprising things have come to light in a recent study regarding this.
Vitamin D supplement is considered beneficial for people of all ages, but a recent study has made a sensational claim. Researchers from America's Harvard School of Public Health and London's Queen Mary University have claimed in a new study that vitamin D supplements do not strengthen children's bones. Giving vitamin D supplements to children does not reduce the risk of bone fractures. To put it in simple language, there is no benefit for children in taking Vitamin D supplements. This has come to light in the clinical trials of researchers.
In this study published in Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, it has been told that about 8,800 school children aged 6 to 13 years were included in this research. Even after giving doses of Vitamin D supplements to the children involved, the bones did not get stronger nor did the risk of fractures reduce. According to researchers, this happened because the Vitamin D supplement could not combine with calcium in the children's body and it failed completely. Even after giving supplement doses to the children for three years, Vitamin D deficiency was found in them, whereas in the children who were not given the dose, the level of Vitamin D was found to be higher as compared to the children who took the supplement.
According to the researchers, vitamin D supplementation works better in adults and works best for the prevention of fractures. When given with calcium, it also strengthens the bones of adults. Vitamin D is naturally present in fatty meat and fish oil. It is produced when sunlight falls on human skin. It has been linked to bone health. Deficiency of Vitamin D also increases the risk of serious bone diseases.
