The mythology of Govardhan Puja
According to beliefs, earlier all the people of Braj used to worship Indra. At the behest of Lord Shri Krishna, all the people of Braj started worshiping Govardhan, due to which Lord Indra became angry and started heavy rain in Braj. The destruction started happening all around. Seeing all this, Lord Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain on his little finger to protect everyone.
All the Braj residents along with their families and animals took shelter under Govardhan Mountain. It rained heavily for seven days. But even this did not deter the Braj people, then Indra Dev realized that Shri Krishna was not an ordinary child. In such a situation, he apologized to Shri Krishna. Only then Govardhan Puja is performed all over the country.
Importance of 56 Bhog
It is said that Lord Shri Krishna had saved the people of Braj from the wrath of Lord Indra, hence 56 types of offerings were prepared for Shri Krishna by all the people of Braj. Since then this tradition started and even today 56 offerings are made to the Lord on the day of Govardhan Puja. It is believed that those who offer 56 offerings to Shri Krishna on this day never lack anything in their lives.
