Earthquakes are one of the most common natural disasters in the world, and an early warning can be vital in helping people prepare to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. To keep users safe, Google developed the Android Earthquake Alert system, which uses sensors in Android smartphones to detect and predict earthquakes. It has already been deployed in many countries around the world to provide early warning to people around the world when earthquakes occur.
Now, in consultation with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Seismology Center (NSC), Google is introducing the Android Earthquake Alert System in India. Through this launch, Google aims to provide Android users with automatic early warning alerts when an earthquake occurs in their area.

Every Android smartphone is equipped with a tiny accelerometer that can act as a mini seismometer. When the phone is plugged in and charging, it can detect the onset of an earthquake. If multiple phones detect an earthquake-like shaking at the same time, Google's servers can use this information to predict when an earthquake may occur and also determine its intensity and epicenter.

Then, Google servers can send alerts to nearby phones. Internet signals travel at the speed of light, which is much faster than the propagation of earthquake shocks through the ground, so alerts often reach phones several seconds before a serious shaking occurs.
Earthquake alerts are designed to be easy to read and follow and are available in Indian languages supported by Android.
