Different types of tribes live in many parts of our country. Everyone's way of living and wearing clothes is completely different from others. While some tribes have a custom of marrying their own chosen mate, some tribes have a tradition of living together without getting married. Some tribes like to be in life in a relationship and decide to get married only after the birth of children. One such tribe is the Garasiya tribal tribe of Rajasthan.

This tribe has gained a prominent place in the Indian culture due to its lifestyle. The Garasiya tribal community has not only focused the attention of the state of Rajasthan but also on the states outside. The Garasiya tribal community is considered to be the third-largest tribal group in the state of Rajasthan. The people of this community live in different parts of this state like Kotra of Sirohi, Abu Road tehsil, Bali and Desuri tehsil of Pali district, Gogunda and Kherwara tehsils of Udaipur. Let's know some interesting things related to this tribe.

History of Garasiya Tribe

The word 'Garasia' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Gras' which denotes a substance. History says that after being defeated by AlauddinKhilji, the Rajputs flew into the hilly areas of the Bhil tribes. The Garasiyas took over the Bhil tribes and came to be known as the Garasiya tribal community. He is associated with the medieval Rajput community. Moreover, the Garasiya tribes are popularly known as 'the fallen Rajputs' and according to popular belief, these Garasiya tribes emerged as the descendants of the famous Chauhans of Rajasthan state. Some say that the Garasiya tribe is a descendant of Rajputs who married a Bhil woman.

Give priority to living in a relationship

The most interesting aspect of the Garasiya tribe is that they allow live-in relationships among its members even before marriage. The annual Gaur Mela, an important festival for the tribe, is where couples elope with partners of their choice. After they return, the boy's family has to pay an amount to the bride's family; After which they get married and live together. The special feature of this tribe is that women can look for a new live-in partner at another fair, hoping to pay a higher price to the former partner of the woman. Unlike elsewhere in India, in the Garasiya community, women hold a higher position than men, and the man is responsible for bearing all the expenses of the wedding.

Marriage takes place after the birth of a child

Another special thing about this tribe is that women choose the partner of their choice and live in life with them and marry them only when they have a child and they are happy with the partner. If they have any kind of dissatisfaction, then they can break the relationship without any hesitation. This happens only because women hold a higher status in this tribe and for this reason, there is never any incident of rape or assault on women in this tribe. Not only this, if they do not have children while living in a live-in, then they can also look for another partner.

Do farming for a living

Even though the entire Garasiya tribal community can be divided into several clans, they rarely maintain unity among themselves. The people of the Garasia tribe do agriculture to sustain their livelihood. The food habits of the Garasiya tribes also follow the tradition of any other agrarian tribal community in the state. Maize is the staple food grown by all the Garasia families. Apart from this, they also include rice, jowar and wheat in their diet. Rabri is considered to be the favourite food of the Garasiya people. They prepare Lapsi, Malpua, Churmaetc during all their auspicious occasions. The Garasia tribe is mostly vegetarian and they do not have any kind of alcohol addiction.

Garasia tribe is also ahead in fashion

The clothes worn by the Garasiya tribal community are quite stylish. Both men and women of the Garasiya tribal community have developed their distinct styles of dressing. Much silver jewellery is in their fashion. The women of the Garasiya community usually wear Jhulkis, girdled Ghagras and Odhni whereas men are known for their red or white turban which is also known as Safa or Potiyu. Men's attire includes tunic, kurta and dhoti. Tattooing is also very popular among Garasiya women.

Thus the Garasiya tribe occupies a completely different place from many other tribes and the practices followed in this community make them different from others.
