Jeans are one such fashion statement that has been around for centuries, if not years. Yes, jeans have a history of more than 200 years and if there is a slight difference in their style, then the rest of the jeans are the same as the Levis Company made in the beginning. Jeans have seen many basic differences over the years, but the colour remains blue.

It is not that the fabric of denim is blue but it is dyed blue. But the question arises why this colour is only blue and why is it still considered the best? For this, we need to have some basic knowledge about jeans.

Some basic facts related to jeans-

  • Jeans are also made of cotton, that is, their original colour is white.
  • Several threads are joined together to make the fabric of jeans. This cloth is slightly thicker than the rest of the cloth.
  • Jeans are dyed only in blue colour for which natural indigo dye is used.

Now you must be thinking that when jeans are made of cotton threads, why are they dyed only in blue? So the reason for this is the process of dyeing the jeans and its effect. For this, even a little bit of chemistry is known.

Have you ever noticed that only blue jeans have either white or a lighter shade of blue on the inside?

Shades like black, pink, brown, etc. often show the same colour on the inside as on the outside. This happens because of the chemical dye.

Why was the blue colour chosen?

If you have ever seen the dyeing of cloth, then you would know that the dye is used on the cloth using high temperature with hot water or any other technique. This is the reason that most of the dyes do their work only at high temperatures, but this was not the case with blue dye i.e. indigo dye. This natural dye sticks only to the outer threads and does not require such a high temperature.

In such a situation, every time the jeans are washed, a little dye comes out and the fabric of the jeans automatically becomes soft. Because indigo dye was cheaper than chemical dye, it was considered more economical.

Jeans were initially made for America's workers and after that Levis company patented rivets (small buttons in jeans) to provide better jeans for workers.

After that, the technique of dyeing these jeans came to know and as soon as the word spread that the fabric of jeans becomes soft after washing, people liked it very much. Jeans became not only a fashion statement but a necessity which continues to date.

After the cloth of the jeans becomes soft, you can also recycle it in many ways and this work was also very much liked by the workers. Within a few days, the trend of self-made jeans bags also came and by 1900, jeans went beyond America, London and gradually spread all over the world.

Even now a similar process is used for dyeing jeans and jeans are being considered as a fashion statement. Blue jeans and their different shades are still very much liked by the people and you will find its different variants in the market.
