Globally, mental health problems are seen to be increasing rapidly. It has boomed especially since the Covid-19 pandemic. The situation is that now even young people are falling prey to it. Health experts say, taking care of mental health is essential to keep the whole body healthy. Mental-physical health is complementary to each other, that is, the effect of a problem in one can affect the other.

Researchers studying depression said that depression should not be considered only as a problem affecting mental health. There can also be a risk of many types of physical side effects. If you are a victim of depression then you may also have problems with migraine, heart diseases, blood pressure, and weak immunity.

The link between migraine and depression
If you think migraine is just a common headache problem, then be careful. The researchers found that migraine may be a psychosomatic disorder. Psychosomatic disorders refer to mental health problems that affect physical health as well or have symptoms similar to those of physical health problems.

One study suggests that people with depression are three times more likely to develop migraines, while people who have migraines maybe five times more likely to develop depression.

Risk of depression due to migraine
Experts from the American Migraine Foundation point out that migraines, depression, and stress are linked. People with migraines are almost five times more likely to develop depression than others. Many people develop depression months or years after the onset of a migraine, says Don Buss, MD, professor in the Department of neurology at Albert Einstein College. Both migraine and depression can be genetic.

Migraine risk in depressed patients
Both migraine and depression are thought to be related to low levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) or serotonin receptors. Serotonin transporters can also cause gene alterations. Migraine can be seen as a problem negatively affecting the quality of life, which can lead to mental health problems.

Similarly, migraines can manifest as a psychosomatic disorder over time in people who have depression.

Health experts say all people should keep avoiding these two problems. If you have a migraine, get it treated in time, it can increase the risk of depression in you.
