Air pollution is harmful to overall health. The way the air quality in the capital Delhi-NCR has remained poor and at a very poor level for the last two months is definitely a matter of concern. Studies show that due to constant exposure to polluted air, there can be many negative effects on health.

Pollution is dangerous for the lungs as well as it can affect heart health and the brain. Its side effects are not limited to this, in recent studies, experts have also warned people about mental health problems due to increasing pollution.

In the study, researchers said that the side effects of air pollution have been seen on the mental health of people of all ages, from children to the elderly. The more you are exposed to polluted air, the more the risk of health-related problems increases in you. Doctors say all people need to keep making continuous efforts to avoid it.

Effect of air pollution on mental health

Studies have found that air pollution increases the risk of both mental health problems and brain-related diseases. Researchers have found that people who are exposed to air pollution may have an increased risk of anxiety, depression, and mental disorders over time. Some studies have also found it to increase the risk of brain diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer's.

Polluted air is also considered harmful to the mental health of children and adolescents. Children and adolescents exposed to poor air quality may have an increased risk of developing bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and suicidal thoughts in the future.

Problems caused by pollution

Now the question is how does air pollution harm mental health?

Studies conducted to understand this found that polluted air contains an excess of nitric oxide and other gases and chemicals. Every 10 μg/m3 increase in nitric oxide levels doubles the risk of depression in people living in that place. Apart from this, other harmful chemicals present in polluted air have been found to increase the risk of stress and suicide by affecting brain functioning.

Brain problems

Research suggests that air pollution can cause inflammation in the brain, which causes damage to neurons and the nervous system. Inflammatory conditions in the brain have been considered a major cause of serious diseases like dementia.

Given the risks caused by pollution, health experts advise all people to keep protecting themselves from it.

What do doctors say?

Dr. Arunesh Kumar, Senior Consultant of Respiratory Medicine at a Gurugram-based hospital, said that to avoid the ill effects of pollution, all people should avoid outdoor activities, especially in the morning and late evening. During this time the air quality is usually the worst. If it is necessary to go out, wear an N95 or good quality mask. This can help filter harmful particles.

Apart from outdoor pollution, indoor pollution is also dangerous, to avoid this it is advisable to use air purifiers. Indoor plants like aloe vera and snake plants improve air quality naturally.
