What did RBI Governor say on Paytm Wallet?
Let us tell you that a major action has been taken by RBI on Paytm. On January 31, 2024, the banking sector regulator Reserve Bank of India, while taking action against Paytm Payments Bank, banned it from adding new customers as well as taking deposits or top-ups in the customer's account. Earlier this ban was to come into effect from 29 February 2024 but later the moratorium was extended to 15 March.
The March 15 deadline will not be extended
RBI Governor said that 80 to 85 percent of Paytm wallets are linked to other banks, due to which they will not have to face any kind of problems. The remaining 15 percent of users have been advised to link their Paytm wallet with other banks. Shaktikanta Das said that the deadline for linking the wallets linked to Paytm Payments Bank with other banks was fixed for March 15 and now there is no scope for extending this deadline.
Let us tell you that ever since RBI took action against Paytm Payment Bank, this decision has been criticized. Responding to these criticisms, RBI said that the RBI action is against the regulated entity Paytm Payment Bank and not against any fintech company.
Apart from this, regarding NPCI's decision on Paytm Payments App license, the RBI Governor said that steps will be taken in this regard only after an internal investigation. If NPCI considers continuing with Paytm payment app, we have no problem. Because our action was against Paytm Payment Bank.
